The Center for Civil Rights and Labor History is a building that serves three major functions: exhibition and display space, multimedia education center, and housing. The building is concieved as a solid mass joined to a transparent box. The solid mass contains the traditional classroom spaces, offices, library, and housing. The transparent box contains the exhibition space on the ground level, and the creative and collaborative spaces suspended from the ceiling and connected by a series of ramps. The transparency allows a connection between the exhibition hall, and the creative spaces where the content for the exhibitions is created. The ramps also invite the public up into the building to witness the creation of the art and media on display below.
